WHAT'S AN ORGANIC FARM?
Organic farming practice recognises the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced. |
Artificial fertilizers are banned and farmers develop fertile soils by crop rotation in age-old practices using compost, manure, grasses and clover. |
Strictly regulated by ‘standards,’ organic farming practices define what farmers can and cannot do in raising crops and livestock. |
Strong emphasis is placed on the protection and longevity of the environment. |

Are there any farms
left in Mecklenburg County?
NOT TOO MANY!
Mecklenburg County has very little open agricultural land left. Farms used to dot the landscpae around the City of Charlotte and the other smaller towns of the County: Pineville, Huntersville, Davidson, Mint Hill Matthews, etc.
Not anymore! The urban sprawl of growing towns and the City now has made farmland scarce and the subdivsion king. In fact, many of the subdivsions and rural roads are named after long past farms or for the families that owned those farms.
This urbanization raises all sorts of issues about the quality of the runoff from developed land into our water supply (creeks and rivers).
You might still find a farmhouse, silo or barn around, but most of these farm buildings are now decorations in suburban areas.
Fresh local foods from farms are harder to find within the county. Organic foods from local farms are even rarer.
